FEED TIPS
Which Feed is Appropriate for me?
Most Important : READ THE LABELS
Try applying the following 4 criteria to the question
- How much energy does my horse need to stay in condition and perform well
- Can I avoid adding numerous additives or supplements
- Can I get a regular consistent supply
- Is it palatable and easy to feed
Answers
- Energy requirements are individually based on each horse. As a basic guide your horse needs to eat between 1.25% and 3% of its body weight daily. 10% to 50% of this amount needs to be items supplying energy. Therefore as a rough guide you need to look for a feed returning 10-11 megajoules of digestible energy per kg.
- Providing you follow the feeding instructions on the tag, all Robank Feeds contain a balanced vitamin and mineral premix which should provide adequate amounts for the average horse.
- Supply remains consistent as the mill operates continually throughout the year.
- Fresh quality ensures palatability. Using Robank mixes is easy to feed, as often the only other item that needs to be added is extra roughage in the form of hay or chaff.
Simple Rules to follow for feeding Horses
- Water - Water is single most important item in any horses diet. The water requirements varies based on temperature, activity, lactation and the type and amount of feed. As a practical guideline, horses should have unlimited access to fresh, clean water.
- Forage - The majority of the diet should be composed of forage. As a rule, at least 50% of what is fed should consist of either pasture hay, hay cubes or chaff.
- Grain - If grain is fed, never feed more than 2.5kg per meal, for a 500kg horse. If more than 2.5kg of grain must be fed per day, divide the grain into at least two smaller meals. Large single meals of grain result in starch fermentation in the hindgut potentially leading to colic and founder.
- Feeding Schedule - Feed horses on a routine schedule from day to day and feed at least twice a day.
- Intake - Horses will consume between 1.25% and 3% of their body weight per day in dryfeed. A comfortable intake per day for most horses is 1.5% to 2.5% of bodyweight. For a 500kg horse, this equates to 7.5 to 10kg of total feed intake each day.
- Changing the diet - Dietary changes should be made slowly over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. This will help avoid digestive upset or colic.
